Plant Zone and Direction Vocabulary for Manufacturing Workers

A manufacturing plant is usually large and split into many different zones. Without the English names for those zones, it's hard to follow an instruction like "go to the warehouse," or to ask a coworker for directions. This vocabulary covers the plant zones and direction words you'll need most.

Zones Around the Plant

These are the main areas you'll find in a typical assembly plant:

• main gate — the main entrance, where you badge in.
• locker room — where you change and store your personal belongings.
• body shop — the area where vehicle frames are welded.
• paint shop — the painting area.
• assembly line — the main area where parts are put together.
• quality gate — the final inspection area before a vehicle passes.
• warehouse — where materials are stored and distributed.
• training center — the room used for employee training.
• canteen — where you eat and take breaks.
• first aid room — where you go for minor injuries.

Direction Words

Once you know the zone names, you also need words to describe where things are:

• left and right
• straight ahead
• next to — "The canteen is next to the training center."
• near — "The locker room is near the main gate."
• behind
• in front of
• opposite

Short Example Sentences

A few common patterns for asking about or giving directions:

• "Where is the warehouse?"
• "Go straight ahead, then turn left."
• "The first aid room is next to the team leader's office."
