Hand Tool and Fastener Vocabulary for Manufacturing Workers

Every work station in a plant has its own set of tools, and a team leader or coworker will usually name them in English — "pass me the wrench," "use the torque gun." Without those tool names, even a simple instruction can feel confusing. Here's the tool and fastener vocabulary you'll hear most often.

Common Hand Tools

• wrench — used to tighten or loosen bolts.
• screwdriver — used to turn a screw.
• hammer
• pliers — used to grip or cut wire.
• drill
• tape measure — used to measure length.

Example: "Can you pass me the wrench?"

Tools Specific to the Assembly Line

• torque gun — an electric or pneumatic tool that tightens bolts to a specific force, or torque.
• toolbox — where tools are kept and carried.

The torque gun gets special attention because it's directly tied to quality and safety standards — a bolt that's too loose or too tight can become a real problem.

Fasteners

These words sound simple, but you'll hear them constantly on the line:

• screw
• bolt
• nut
• fastener — the general term covering screws, bolts, and nuts together.

Example: "This bolt is loose." or "Check the fastener before you continue."

Short Example Sentences
