Machines on a production line don't always run smoothly — sometimes there's a strange noise, a leak, or a sudden stop. When that happens, you need to be able to report it quickly and clearly, in English, to a team leader or technician. This vocabulary covers the words for describing machine faults and problems.

Basic Fault Words

  • fault
  • breakdown — a machine stopping completely.
  • not working — "This machine is not working."
  • broken
  • error — usually shown on a machine's display.

Describing the Symptoms

  • leaking — "The machine is leaking oil."
  • stuck
  • jammed — often used for a conveyor or a machine with moving parts.
  • noisy — "It's making a noisy sound."
  • overheating
  • warning light — an indicator light that turns on when there's a problem.

Reporting and Handling the Problem

  • report — "I'll report it to the team leader."
